Before the surgery, I have always been insecure on how one of my shoulder blades would stick out and I would wear baggier clothing to hide it. However, I never thought of it to be abnormal until my mum pointed it out. I was eventually diagnosed with scoliosis and later learnt I required surgery to prevent it from worsening. The doctor that would be performing the surgery, Mr Arun Ranganathan, reassured my family and I and ran though all the details and risks of the procedure. Before the procedure I didn't have any issues or concerns and I felt generally calm, especially after seeing his video on Operation live, I was pretty confident that I was in safe hands. I arrived at the hospital very early in the morning on the day of the surgery. Beforehand, I met the team who would be in the operating room, they explained their role, what would happen and what to expect which was comforting to know. After the surgery, I personally didn't find the pain to be unbearable because you are able to give yourself painkillers. I was more uncomfortable because I wasn't used to lying on my back but as the days passed the pain reduced and I got used to my position. I highly appreciate the staff who cared for me during the recovery period as they helped me get through the experience and made sure I was comfortable. After about a week, I was attempting getting up from the bed to sit in a chair and walking. It was a bit of a struggle but the team helped me get to the point where I could walk well. Eventually I was able to go home. My thoratic spine used to be 36 degrees and my lumbar, 29 but now the curve is less than 10 degrees which is the same as a normal spine. I feel confident in my clothes and no longer have to worry about the curve worsening so I would highly recommend Mr Rangathan if you are getting the same procedure.

BEFORE THE SURGERY: About 4 years ago my parents saw how uneven my shoulders were and how lopsided i stood (bearing in mind my back would always be in pain). The doctors took straight action and referred me to the Royal London hospital. Approximately 3 years ago i was then diagnosed with scoliosis. This is when i started to see Mr Arun Ranganathan. Across these 3 years i was told how severe my scoliosis was (62 degrees) and the different ways as to which it could be cured. I was thinking about getting a brace but seeing as i am a teenager, i would have to wear it under my clothes for 22 hours a day which i did not like the idea of. the only other option that would seem to work with my case would be surgery. when i heard that this was the only option there were days when I would cry and regret agreeing to this option but now this is the best decision i have made in my entire life! After agreeing to this option, a couple of months later i had many appointments to ask all the questions i needed, blood tests and all the information i would need to know about the day. Mr Ranganathan and his assistants answered all of my questions with great detail and made sure i wasn't scared! THE DAY OF THE SURGERY: i had to get to the hospital a day before and i was really nervous. I really didn't want to do it due to the risks (although they're minimal) and because my surgery was just at the start of summer which meant people were going to have fun without me. Another thing i was most worried about was the large scar i was going to have and if it will show when i wear my clothes. the next day my surgery started early in the morning and took about 4 hours. when i woke up i didn't even know it happened because i was in ZERO pain and i was very tired.i was in the hospital for 5-6 days and Mr Ranganathan and the rest of the team made sure they visited me and came if i needed help almost everyday. I was in intensive care for the first two days and moved to a ward for the rest. I was taught how to walk, sit up and sit on a chair all by myself. Once you have to do it by yourself it may be hard but my advice is to never give up because you can do it if you put your mind to it! i didn't have any worries about pain because i was given as much pain relief as i needed. AFTER THE SURGERY: on the ride home i found it quite hard as it was a bumpy road so i needed pillows. when you get home i would recommend not laying on a large bed but laying on a single bed as it is easier to grab things and move around. this was a mistake i unfortunately made on my first day home. for the first two weeks i really regretted doing the surgery because i couldn't go out as much as i thought i could and every position was uncomfortable. Fortunately all you need is a fun, loving family and friends to make you forget about the pain. i would say in 4 weeks i was able to do all the minimal things i could do before like going to the toilet and walking around with no help. in my opinion i would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this surgery to anyone as all members of staff at the hospital were exceptionally trust worthy and polite and in a few years you'll definitely know its the best choice you've made. also the outcome is tremendous. i went from having a very curvy spine to the tiniest curve (as scoliosis is not 100% curable).

I had been suffering with a facet cyst on my spine which was touching my spinal nerve for some months before visiting Mr Ranganathan and was unable to walk very far without extreme nerve pain. He was able to diagnose my problem immediately and suggested surgery but I was about to go on holiday so Mr. Ranganathan suggested a spinal steroid injection to help with the pain. At all times he explained everything very clearly to me and I had great confidence in him from our first meeting. After my holiday Mr. Ranganathan was able to fit me into his busy schedule very quickly for surgery. Everything was explained to me very clearly and I was shown the results of both my MRI and CT scans which further gave me a good understanding of what needed to be done. The surgery lasted about three and a half hours and was extremely successful as I was free of the chronic nerve pain immediately after and was only suffering from discomfort from the actual operation and within 36 hours I was able to walk freely (albeit slowly) along the corridor. I have no hesitation in recommending Mr Ranganathan. He is a very pleasant and friendly person as well as being a wonderful surgeon!
